Here’s what’s cooking at Beginnings!

Dr. Donna Housman

We make it a priority to provide delicious and nutritious snacks for your children during the day. Those snacks taste better when they are picked fresh off trees by children and cooked up in the classroom!

Recently, we traveled to Honey Pot Hill Orchards for a school-wide field trip. We walked down long rows of trees, picked lots of apples and learned a few things about autumn, farming, and the legendary Johnny Appleseed! We learned that Johnny Appleseed planted seeds into nutrient rich soil, watered and provided plenty of sunlight for seeds to grow into apple trees and produce the delicious fruit we pick today.

Thanks to Johnny, we had a surplus of apples at Beginnings! With a bountiful supply, our teachers helped students discover the many ways to share some of fall’s favorite treats with the school.

Here’s one of our favorite recipes for apple sauce. The SPARK and Sun Rooms did a great job making and sharing their creations!

SPARK and Sun Crock Pot Applesauce

4lbs of your favorite apples, cored and quartered

1 cup water

¼ - ½ teaspoon cinnamon or apple pie spice

Sugar, brown sugar, or honey to taste

Add apples, water, and cinnamon or spice to the crock pot and cook for 4-6 on high. When apples have broken down, allow them to cool to room temperature.  Using a colander and the back of a large spoon, strain the peels if apples were left unpeeled. Add sugar and spices to taste.

How do you like your apples?
